NY Documentary Maker Seeks Internees, Descendants

Video, documentary, and multimedia company Fly On The Wall Productions, in association with The Poston Community Alliance, is producing For the Sake of the Children, a 20-minute documentary that looks at the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and its effect on mothers and how they raised their children during and after their incarceration.

Previously, Fly On The Wall produced Passing Poston, a film that documented the lives of four former internees of the Poston Relocation Center in Arizona. Passing Poston screened in several cities after its world premiere in 2008 and aired on 85 PBS stations in 2010.

For the Sake of the Children will examine the impact that the internees’ parenting had on their children and on the generations that followed; in particular the challenges, struggles, and circumstances that individuals from each subsequent generation have faced in shaping, integrating, and reconciling their identities as Japanese Americans.

Fly On The Wall is still in the research and interview process, and they are looking for people of all ages to share their experiences. Here are the criteria:

  • Nisei women who gave birth to children while at camp or who raised children up to the age of 12 while at camp
  • Sansei women and men who were born while at camp or who were children up to the age of 12 while at camp
  • Yonsei women and men whose grandmothers were internees
  • Gosei women and men whose great-grandmothers were internees

Although they are working with The Poston Community Alliance, internees and descendants aren’t required to be from Poston. The grandmothers of yonsei and gosei can be from any of the internment camps.
