Yayoi Kusama Merchandise at UNIQLO

This summer Japanese retailer UNIQLO is turning T-shirts into artists’ canvases with SPRZ NY, its collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art. SPRZ NY (meaning “surprise”) is a vehicle for making art accessible and helping New Yorkers discover art through a simple piece of clothing.

The upper level of UNIQLO’s Fifth Avenue flagship store is home to T-shirts – as well as tote bags, bandanas and socks – featuring artwork inspired by twelve artists in MoMA’s collection.

One of the artists is Yayoi Kusama, the iconic Japanese master of the polka dot who redefined contemporary in New York for 16 years. Bright reds and yellows, pumpkins and, of course, polka dots dominate Kusama’s section of the floor.
