BentOn Cafe to Appear on NHK World TV Bento Program

NHK World TV is working on a television program focused on the popularity of bento outside of Japan, including Paris, San Francisco, and New York. Thanks to a tweet by Nichibei Foundation, a non-profit media organization in the Bay Area, JapanCulture•NYC made contact with a San Francisco-based food blogger and bento packer named Biggie.

Even though I knew bento “packer” most likely meant non-Japanese New Yorkers who make bento at home every morning to have for lunch while at work, my first reaction was to recommend BentOn Cafe, a local business that prepares and delivers boxed lunches throughout the city and is one of JC•NYC’s 5 Great Bento Places in New York.

As it turns out, the folks at NHK World TV were interested in BentOn Cafe and the business side of bento. Ken Tanaka of Japanese television production company Amazon Laterna also interviewed yours truly to discuss how fortunate New Yorkers are to have the convenience of prepared bento in the city.

The program will be in English and is scheduled to air on September 6 on NHK World TV (Channel 771 on Time Warner Cable) and online.
