Fourth Anniversary Memorial for Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami Victims

First Church of Christ, Scientist – 10 W. 68th Street at Central Park West

Wednesday, March 11 marks the fourth anniversary of the triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown that devastated Northeastern Japan. While daily life has resumed in some areas, there are still more than 80,000 people living in temporary housing, and recovery is still years away.

Various Japanese American community groups and Fellowship for Japan, led by Executive Director and Japanese recording star AK Akemi Kakihara, once again hosts a memorial to the victims of that horrific event.

AK will be joined by guest speakers Ambassador Reiichiro Takahashi, newly appointed Consul General of Japan in New York; Motoatsu Sakura, President of Japan Society; Koichi Matsuda of the New York Iwate Kenjinkai; and Kyohmi Takahashi, a homemaker from Miyagi Prefecture.

Guests will see video messages from people from Tohoku, including the Minato Preschool in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture.  Japanese singer/songwriter Mariko Hata and a chorus group of Japan will perform “Heroes 2011, Japan.”

100% of the profit from donations collected will be used to support relief in the affected areas of Tohoku.

Guests are encouraged to bring a pen to write a message for the people in Tohoku. Volunteers will collect all of the message cards at the church and send them to Japan.
