“We Are X” Visual Kei and Yoshiki Classical Giveaways

Powered by big hair, vast quantities of makeup, and outlandish leather-and-chains costumes, Visual Kei began in Japan in the 1980s and continues to make a fashion statement today. One of the pioneers of the movement is the band X Japan, which formed in Chiba in 1982 and has sold millions of records around the world. X Japan and its dynamic drummer/pianist Yoshiki have reached euphoric highs and tragic lows, all of which are chronicled in We Are X, a documentary directed by Stephen Kijak that begins screening at Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn on November 4.

In keeping with the glam-rock essence of X Japan, Alamo Drafthouse is holding a Visual Kei contest for attendees of the screenings on Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5. Although the 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. shows and post-screening Q&A sessions with Yoshiki and Kijak on November 4 are sold out, fans who already have tickets are encouraged to wear Visual Kei fashions. Tickets are still available for Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. screening and Q&A with the film’s director.

You can also enter the Yoshiki Classical Subway Contest in conjunction with the versatile musician’s concerts at Carnegie Hall on January 12 and 13, 2017. Yes, Yoshiki is the drummer for the aforementioned heavy metal band X Japan, but he’s also classically trained. He’ll conduct the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in January, and in honor of occasion, Yoshiki is giving away a Yoshiki Classical poster.

To enter, simply take a picture in front of the Yoshiki Classical subway ad at 57th Street and 6th Avenue, which will be there until Sunday, November 6, and upload it to Instagram with the hashtag #YoshikiNYC! The deadline to enter is Sunday, November 13 at 11:59 p.m. PT, which is technically Monday, November 14 at 2:59 a.m. ET. Only one entry per Instagram account is allowed, and entrants must be 18 years old or older.
