The Saga Prefectural Government is teaming up with Blue Ribbon Restaurants for a special weeklong celebration, Arita Meets New York, to commemorate 400 years of Arita porcelain-ware.

This exhibition will showcase plates, bowls, cups, and other porcelain tableware, all made in Arita, a town renowned for its porcelain craftsmanship. With pieces exclusively selected for this collaboration with Blue Ribbon, Arita Meets New York will also include a very special meet-and-greet with six producers of Aritaware, all visiting from Japan, on Monday, February 6, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to be able to collaborate with Saga Prefecture to help spread awareness about Aritaware,” says Bowie Fu of Blue Ribbon Restaurants. “This is a very special occasion for New Yorkers to have the special opportunity to learn about the history behind these incredible artisans and experience delicate work of Aritaware in person.”

Arita is a small town located in Saga Prefecture in Kyushu, the southernmost main island of Japan. Every spring, the town, home to more than 150 kilns, hosts a week-long ceramic fair called Arita Ichi, the largest ceramic fair in western Japan, which draws crowds of one million people each year.

Aritaware dates back to 1616, when the immigrant Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong discovered how to make porcelain in the mountains of Arita, resulting in the first-ever porcelain made in Japan. It has spread not only domestically in Japan, but also internationally, having been exported to Europe since the 1650s. During its 400 years of history, Aritaware has grown to include various styles, such as Ko-Imari, Nabeshima, and Kakiemon, which continue to this day. Not only has the traditional craftsmanship of Aritaware been kept of alive, but it has evolved to fit modern-day lifestyles.
