2017 brings an even stronger sense of urgency to create meaningful dialogue between different cultures in order to celebrate diversity and the vast richness of the human spirit. With this conviction, Kaoru Watanabe, whose work combines Japanese ritual and theater traditions with the complex rhythms and compositional of jazz and other global music, is returning to Joe’s Pub on February 25 with an extraordinary lineup of special guests, each revolutionary bandleaders and composers in their own right.

Kenny Endo is perhaps one of the most respected taiko drummers in the world, an innovator and a pioneer of his field and a long time collaborator of Watanabe’s. Alicia Hall Moran is a singer and actress known for playing Bess in the National Tour of Porgy and Bess as well as her brilliant work with such luminaries as Charles Lloyd, Bill T. Jones, and Jason Moran. Jacob Garchik is a trombonist, bandleader, composer who leads some of the most eclectic and celebrated bands in New York (Ye Olde, La Banda, The Heavens). Kinan Azmeh is a globetrotting Syrian clarinet virtuoso who has won international acclaim as a composer, performer, improviser, and recording artist in a wide range of musical genres and with his collaborative works with Yo-Yo Ma. Fumi Tanakadate is a rising star in the world of taiko drumming who has studied extensively with Watanabe and has performed with Kenny Endo and Kodo members Chieko Kojima and Yuta Sumiyoshi.

This concert will feature a wide breadth of music, from frenetic driving rhythms to contemplative melodies and abstract Noh Theater-inspired minimalism. All of these elements are curated in a way as to celebrate the essence of the various cultures represented while achieving an overall sense of harmony and synchronicity.
