Asia Society – 725 Park Avenue (at E. 70th Street)

Admission: Free

The Japan Foundation and Asia Society presents an innovative evening of Japanese traditional music with a concert by The Hougaku Quartet. Featuring four young Japanese musicians playing traditional instruments, the Hougaku Quartet is dedicated to creating music for today and the future on koto and shakuhachi.

Four young graduates of the Tokyo University of the Arts – Noriko Hirata, Yuiko Terai, Hiroyasu Nakajima, and Reison Kuroda – formed the Quartet in 2011, and they carry out their mission of sustaining and expanding this musical traditional by commissioning new works, reviving traditional Japanese music masterpieces composed after the 1960s, and performing in the “sankyoku,” or classical chamber music style.

There will be a special guest performance by Ralph Samuelson on shakuhachi.

The concert is free, but reservations are recommended. For more information, please visit Asia Society’s website.
