May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, and New York City is home to 1.35 million Asians, so it’s time for everyone to celebrate in Chinatown!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, NYC, Japan, Asia, community, JAANY, JACL-NY, JANM, oral history, community service, CAPANew York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration is the nation’s longest running festival celebrating Asian diversity, identity, and participation in community events. It is presented in collaboration with more than 120 community organizations and representatives from eight countries.

Participating non-profit organizations will have booths to provide information regarding voter registration, medical and public health services, immigration issues, LGBT support, and cultural enrichment. There will be a number of entertaining performances throughout the day as well.

Presented by the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA), this year’s celebration continues to follow the themes of coming together as one, celebrating as one, and getting out the vote, coinciding with the Year of the DOG: DO, ORGANIZE, GIVE.

The Japanese American community will be represented by JAA, JACL-NY, Japan SocietyJANM, and ISAN, a project documenting the oral histories of New York’s Japanese Americans. Fold paper kabuto helmets with a volunteer from the Origami Therapy Association while enjoying small food samples donated by Japanese grocery store chain Sunrise Mart and tea tastings provided by ITO EN.

For more information and to make a donation, please visit CAPA’s Eventbrite page.

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the celebration will end early, at 1:00 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 4:00 p.m.
