There has been a recent surge in popularity of arcade games, thanks to Barcade, the part-bar, part-arcade franchise that has several locations featuring classic Japanese video games throughout the New York area.

The Arcade Classics exhibition features more than 30 video arcade games released between 1972 and 1993, drawn from the Museum’s collection. All of the games are playable and include Computer Space (1971), the first video arcade game; Asteroids (1979); and Ms. Pac-man (1981); as well as Japanese classic games Space Invaders (1978) and Donkey Kong (1981).

Though the era of the video arcade game is long gone, arcade games were the grounds for innovation and experimentation that informed the genres, conventions, and play mechanics of the video games that we know today.
