One of my favorite chefs in New York is preparing succulent Japanese meals for pick up from different restaurants in the city. This is exciting news for those who have been craving fine dining but unable to experience it in the outdoor settings of today’s restaurant scene. Chef Abe Hiroki, the former Executive Chef at En Brasserie, offers a variety of dishes using premium and seasonal ingredients. He calls it “abento,” a clever mashup of “Abe” and “bento.”
Premium Triple Beef Bowl – $45
Ikura Don – $35
Anago Don – $35
Seasonal Veggie Bowl – $35
Dessert, sake, and pantry items are also available. For descriptions and the full menu, please visit Chef Abe’s website.

I ordered the Ikura Don when it was available at Momokawa in the Upper East Side. Take a look at this beautiful meal. The abundance of salmon chunks mixed with the rice was the most pleasantly surprising part. PRO TIP: Get the Amabuki sake. You’re welcome.
I also ordered Chef Abe’s yuzu kosho dressing, which, with its zest and depth of flavor, is the perfect seasoning for fresh veggies.
A native of Fukuoka, Chef Abe has been a fixture of New York’s Japanese culinary landscape for almost two decades. His commitment to seasonality and creativity has made Japanese cuisine accessible to everyone. In addition to Abento, Chef Abe is also a private chef offering catered meals for parties of four to eight people. Check his website if you want to add his personal touch to your home.
Dining is certainly different these days, but with Abento, you can still enjoy an exceptional meal by an extraordinary chef.
