Special Sweepstakes

Customers who answer the questionnaire found via the QR code on the TOSA SAKE WEEK 2023 flight menu will have a chance to win a special Bekuhai sake cup set. It consists of three cups of different sizes and designs as well as a top. The cups are part of the Bekuhai game, a traditional sake drinking game enjoyed in Kochi Prefecture. Ten lucky sweepstakes participants will receive this prize.

About the Bekuhai Game

Bekuhai is a traditional drinking game from Kochi in which players spin a top and drink from the cup indicated by the upward facing side of the top as it lands. Each of the cups represents a figure from Japanese folklore: the Okame (funny-faced woman), the Hyottoko (funny-faced man), and the Tengu (Japanese goblin). The Okame is the safest cup on which to land, as it holds a small quantity of sake and can be put down on a table without spilling. The Hyottoko holds more sake and has a hole at its mouth. This hole must be covered by a finger or else it will leak, so the cup cannot be placed on a table without spilling its contents. The Tengu holds the most sake, so players drinking from this cup will get drunk the fastest. The cup cannot be set down due to its long nose.

About Sake and Sake Culture in Kochi

Kochi has an international reputation for excellent sake. Their sake is considered the driest sake in Japan and has a clear aftertaste.

Kochi’s sake has been developed over the ages into the perfect accompaniment for its local cuisine. The prefecture’s unique climate helps produce high-quality rice, one of the main ingredients of sake. With an abundant supply of pure water and locally grown sake rice, Kochi is an ideal location for brewing sake. Kochi sake has a clean tartness, low bitterness, and a full, round flavor. It also contains low levels of glucose.

The spirit of cooperation is strong in Kochi. The 18 local breweries have not only developed a yeast unique to the prefecture, but they also work together to study data on conditions and production and share this information with each other. This culture of knowledge exchange and improving together is different from other sake-producing areas in Japan, and it has helped elevate the sake from Kochi’s breweries.

About “Tosa”

Tosa is the old name for the current Kochi Prefecture. Its origins are derived from the deity Tosa no Kuni Takeyoriwake, who appears in a local myth.
