Experience Fukushima Sake in NYC

For the seventh consecutive year, sake from Fukushima Prefecture won the most Gold Prizes at the Japan Sake Awards. Twenty-two Fukushima sake received the honor, marking the first time a prefecture was named “No. 1 Sake in Japan” seven years in a row. The prestigious sake competition dates back to 1911. The National Research Institute of Brewing and the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association administer this nationwide contest, which aims to improve the quality of sake as well as sake manufacturing technology.

Fukushima sake is known for its mellow, refreshing flavor that is rich in umami. Fukushima attributes its success to the quality of the prefecture’s water as well as the rice it harvests. The overall sake culture and environment for creating high quality sake are factors as well.

New Yorkers have been able to learn more about these award-winning brands through a series of free tasting events. The Fukushima Trade Promotion Council had a presence in New York for four months, operating the FUKUSHIMA SAKE Challenge Shop in Canal Street Market from the beginning of December 2018 until the end of March. The test-market shop offered 50 labels from 11 different sake breweries.

Although the test market closed, the free sake tastings have continued. Union Square Wine and Spirits and Minoru’s Sake Shop in the back of Landmark Wine and Spirits in Chelsea offer monthly events.

See why the breweries from Fukushima have consistently won Gold Prizes at these remaining tastings, which are scheduled through March of 2020. Each event has a seasonal theme (subject to change). Tasting session participants at both locations will receive a 20% discount for Fukushima sake purchased during event hours while supplies last. Both locations are giving a Fukushima masu (a square wooden sake cup) to customers who purchase more than $25 in Fukushima sake. The gift offer is limited to 50.
