Matsuri is the Japanese word for “festival,” but no fan of the Japanese restaurant by that name is in a festive mood, as the popular Chelsea hotspot closed its doors on Saturday, March 24. The Tao Group purchased both Matsuri and the adjacent Hiro Ballroom, Eater reported in December 2011. Read the JC•NYC interview with Executive Chef Tadashi Ono about the closing here.
Lovers of Japanese cuisine – myself included – are lamenting the loss. The sublime dishes Chef Ono served as well as the beautiful space will be missed.
Chef Ono is currently working on a cookbook with food journalist Harris Salat, with whom he has written Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals; and The Japanese Grill: From Classic Yakitori to Steak, Seafood, and Vegetables.
