We’ve talked about yakitori on many occasions here at JapanCulture•NYC, and here’s another skewered dish worth noting: Kushiage (串揚げ). “Kushi” means skewer, as its kanji depicts.
The difference between kushiage and yakitori is that with kushiage, the chunks of meat, seafood, and vegetables are breaded with panko and deep-fried. A thick, slightly sweet dipping sauce also comes with kushiage. You can also dab a little karashi (Japanese mustard) for added flavor and a little kick.
So where can you find these skewers in New York? Village Yokocho, nestled between Panya and Sunrise Mart in the East Village, is a great place to try kushiage. I went there last night, and here are a few photos of the fried goodness.
