Internationally acclaimed New York-based Japanese jazz singer TAEKO helps to kick off the newest addition to New York’s jazz scene with two sets at the Sound Bite. A brand new eatery in Hell’s Kitchen that combines Cajun food with Southern and Italian flavors, the Sound Bite will host live jazz and blues on Fridays and Saturdays.
This Saturday TAEKO will be accompanied by Yoichi Uzeki on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, and George Gray on drums.
Growing up in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, TAEKO was inspired early on by the traditional Japanese music her father and grandfather played, but she became interested in American music at a young age. She counts traditional jazz, modern American music, and Eastern music among her influences in shaping her contemporary vocal style to this day.
TAEKO moved to New York City in the late 1990s and has performed at some of the most prestigious clubs on the East Coast, including the Kitano, Zinc Bar, Birdland, and Blue Note. She’s released three CDs to date.
