Internationally acclaimed New York-based Japanese jazz singer TAEKO has two sets at the Sound Bite. The venue is the brainchild of Emmy Award-winning news anchor and celebrity chef Julian Phillips and his wife, world-renowned jazz vocalist Barbara King. The Hell’s Kitchen eatery hosts live jazz and blues while serving Cajun, Southern, and Italian flavors.
The traditional Japanese music her father and grandfather played inspired TAEKO while growing up in Shiga Prefecture. She became interested in American music at a young age. She counts traditional jazz, modern American music, and Eastern music among her influences.
TAEKO moved to New York City in the late 1990s and quickly earned the nickname “Songbird” from the NYC Jazz elite. She has performed at some of the most prestigious jazz clubs on the East Coast, including the Kitano, Zinc Bar, Birdland, and Blue Note. With a never-ending stream of musical ideas and a fluid delivery that shows years of dedication to studying her craft, TAEKO has built a dedicated fan base in both the U.S. and overseas. She’s released three CDs to date, and she will release her fourth album this summer.
