How to Wear Yukata

It’s officially summer, and the warmer weather ushers in yukata season! If you haven’t mastered the technique of putting on this traditional cotton kimono worn during the hot summer months, don’t worry! Japan Performing Arts, Inc. is offering free lessons!
Every Tuesday from now through the end of August, JPA will give free instruction via Zoom on how to wear a yukata properly. (Please note: There will be no class on July 7.)
What You’ll Need
- Two strings
- Korin belt, a tool that helps you tie the collar of the yukata (optional)

About Japan Performing Arts, Inc.
Yuko Hamada, a dancer and choreographer of Nihon Buyo, or traditional Japanese dance, formed JPA. A former member of Takarazuka Revue Company, Japan’s renowned all-female theater group, Hamada graduated from the dramatic writing program of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She has written, produced, and directed three Off-Broadway plays.
