Ninohe City Fair in New York 2017: Exhibition & Lecture on Japanese Urushi and Joboji Lacquerware

Ninohe City Fair is back in New York!
Ninohe City is a small town in Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku region of Japan that specializes in the production of urushi, or Japanese lacquer. The region’s lacquerware tradition dates back thousands of years. Joboji-Urushi, the particular type of Urushi found in Ninohe City, is renowned for its high quality and has been designated as the lacquer of choice in the preservation of World Heritage Sites such as Kinkakuji (the Golden Temple in Kyoto), Chusonji Konjikido (the temple of Iwate), and Toshogu (the shrine of Nikko).
This exhibition presents an exceptional selection of Joboji Urushi lacquerware, considered a form of artistic expression and an inherent part of day-to-day life in Japan.
In addition to the exhibition at The Nippon Club, there will also be a lecture about Japanese Urushi and Joboji Lacquerware on Saturday, October 21 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. In the evening of October 21, Japanese izakaya SakaMai will host a collaborative dinner (details below).

Toshikazu Machida specializes in Joboji Urushi art and design and is an active Urushi artist. The founder of Lakka Studio and the Toshikazu Machida Lacquer Art Institute, Machida is also a member of Japan Kogei Association and the Japanese Society for the Science of Design. His Urushi paintings have been widely exhibited and awarded, and he continues to influence the next generation of Urushi artists.
Ninohe City Fair in New York 2017 Presents Taste of Ninohe Sake Dinner: Collaboration between Bonheur in Ninohe and SakaMai in New York
Saturday, October 21 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
(3 seatings available – 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.)
SakaMai – 157 Ludlow Street (between Stanton and Rivington Streets)
Price: $75 (includes food, Nanbu Bijin sake, tax and gratuity)
“Taste of Ninohe” features a collaboration with Koichi Furudate, owner/chef of Bonheur restaurant in Ninohe and Chef Takanori Akiyama of SakaMai serving their signature dishes and introducing the local ingredients of Iwate.
Ninohe is also famous for its award-winning Nanbu Bijin sake. Kosuke Kuji, the fifth generation president of Nanbu Bijin Brewery, will be in attendance, serving his Tokubetsu Junmai Sake, which won Champion Sake from the International Wine Challenge this year.
