The summer edition of Japan Block Fair took place on Saturday June 15 in the East Village on Third Avenue between 7th Street and St. Mark’s Place.
As usual, several restaurants and vendors were out preparing a ton of great Japanese street food and treats to beat the heat. As always, the longest line was for Hakata Tonton’s pork skewers. In addition to the standard yakisoba from Uminoie, okonomiyaki from Peco Peco, and Japanse-style curry from Go! Go! Curry!, Japan Block Fair welcomed JAPADOG from nearby St. Mark’s Place and Saburi, which served steamed pork buns and cucumbers on a stick.
I loved the aburizushi from Wasan. Aburizushi is not quite sashimi and not quite seared fish, but the fish is, well, torched. Amazing color and flavor!
Due to noise restrictions regulated through sound permits (yes, you need a permit for EVERYTHING in NYC), the stage for performances was a few blocks away on 14th Street, where there was dancing by Foxy Foxes, a karate demonstration, and a karaoke contest.
A yukata dressing demonstration led by Emi Kikuchi of Kimono Experience was a crowd pleaser. Click here for more photos of Japan Block Fair in the East Village!
