Stories from the Pacific War: President Truman’s Grandson Hosts Atomic Bomb Survivor and U.S. Veteran

Masahiro Sasaki, survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the brother of Sadako Sasaki, recounts his memories of his sister and her effort to fold one thousand paper cranes while critically ill and suffering from exposure to atomic bomb radiation. Fred Mitchell, a U.S. Navy Veteran and survivor of kamikaze attacks, reflects on the events that shaped his path toward reconciliation with former “enemies.” This special public program will be moderated by Clifton Truman Daniel, eldest grandson of President Harry Truman. Daniel will share his own journey toward understanding the dropping and effects of the atomic bombs, as well as his own experiences with atomic bomb survivors. A music performance by Yuji Sasaki, Sadako’s nephew, will accompany the program.
