This gripping, morally complex crime procedural had its New York premiere last month during the New York Asian Film Festival. The Third Murder is an intricate and surprising change of pace from internationally acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, winner of this year’s Palme d’Or for his latest film, Shoplifters.
Jaded defense attorney Shigemori (Masaharu Fukuyama) reluctantly takes on the case of Misumi (Kōji Yakusho), a factory worker and former convict who pleads guilty to the murder of his employer—and finds himself in deep water when the client’s story keeps changing. Is this man devising a sinister cover-up or simply losing his mind?
The Third Murder is a powerfully moving drama about Shigemori’s struggle to find the truth while questioning his own faith in the law.
In Japanese with English subtitles
