Sunday, July 14 at 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Tomi Jazz – 239 E. 53rd Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)

Cover: $10

Brooklyn-based Japanese jazz pianist Senri Oe will perform two sets at intimate Midtown East speakeasy Tomi Jazz.

Oe’s career as a pop singer/songwriter in Japan spanned almost 25 years from 1983 until 2007. The Japan Grammy winner released several singles and albums and toured the country extensively.

Changing gears, Oe enrolled in the School of Jazz at the New School in 2008. Upon graduating, he established his own record company, PND Records in 2012. (PND is short for Peace Never Die, an homage to Oe’s dog, Peace, a 12-year-old Dachshund.) Since then, he has released five albums as a jazz pianist and composer. His sixth album, Hmmm, features drummer Ari Hoenig and bassist Matt Clohesy and will be released in September of this year.

Tomi Jazz is a cozy, intimate bar and music club that serves Japanese izakaya-style bites and Japanese whisky. Last year The New York Times wrote an article in its Neighborhood Joint section.

The cover charge is $10, with a minimum $10 order per set. To book in advance, please visit www.tomijazz.com/contact. Specify which of Oe’s shows—either the 8:00 p.m. set or the 9:30 p.m. set—you would like to reserve.
