Brooklyn-based Japanese jazz pianist Senri Oe will premiere the Senri Oe Trio at Birdland Jazz. The trio, featurug drummer Ari Hoenig and bassist Matt Clohesy, will celebrate the upcoming release of their album, Hmmm.
Oe’s career as a pop singer/songwriter in Japan spanned almost 25 years from 1983 until 2007. The Japan Grammy winner released several singles and albums and toured the country extensively.
Changing gears, Oe enrolled in the School of Jazz at the New School in 2008. Upon graduating, he established his own record company, PND Records, in 2012. Since then, he has released five albums as a jazz pianist and composer.
Each album has a distinct style, reflecting Oe’s versatility. From horns (Boys Mature Slow, 2012) to full big band (Spooky Hotel, 2013) to a platform for vocalists (Answer July, 2016), Oe exhibits a spirit of exploration of the jazz form. This summer he collaborated with Janis Siegel of Manhattan Transfer and renowned Japanese enka singer Mika Shinno.
His sixth album, Hmmm, will go on sale in the U.S. on September 20.
