Internationally acclaimed, New York-based Japanese jazz singer TAEKO returns to JAZZ at KITANO for two sets on July 25. The first set is from 8:00 p.m. until 9:15 p.m., and the second set is from 9:45 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Presented by Mar Creation and Flat Nine Records, TAEKO will be joined by the soul-stirring trio of Sharp Radway on piano, Alex Blake on bass, and Victor Jones on drums.

Growing up in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, TAEKO was inspired early on by the traditional Japanese music her father and grandfather played, but she became interested in American music at a young age. She counts traditional jazz, modern American music, and Eastern music among her influences in shaping her contemporary vocal style to this day.

TAEKO moved to New York City in the late 1990s and has been a regular at the Kitano since 2007. In addition to the Kitano, she has performed at some of the most prestigious jazz clubs on the East Coast, including Zinc Bar, Birdland, and Blue Note. She’s released three CDs to date.

Reservations are highly recommended for Thursday’s performances by calling the Kitano at 212-885-7119. There is a $20 minimum food and beverage order for all guests.

“TAEKO is one of the best performers in the U.S. and the world.”
