Noh Society, a New York-based nonprofit, cultural, and educational organization that promotes the arts and culture of Japan, will present a lecture/performance “The Anatomy of Noh – Aoi no Ue” featuring renowned Noh actor Yoshinari Shimizu from the Kanze School in Japan.
Shimizu will examine Aoi no Ue, a Muromachi Era (c. 1336-1573) Noh play based on the character Lady Aoi from the classic novel The Tale of Genji, decoding how the play embodies human obsession. The presentation will culminate in a performance of Aoi no Ue, whereby guests will understand the importance of physical balance and use of space on the stage.
This is a rare opportunity to see and experience the atmosphere of Noh, a traditional Japanese art form that was designated an “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO, in an intimate setting.
