Cultural Activities and Performances

Enjoy performances by JFDINY’s own Minbuza (Japanese folk dance), Samurai Sword Soul (traditional sword fighting), and Taiko Masala (Taiko drumming). While in their activities area, experienced teachers will lead children in a variety of fun Japanese arts and crafts such as origami, calligraphy, kendama, and kimono dressing.

The finale of Japan Fun Fest will be the Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese summer event where everyone joins in and dances together. Come to Japan Fun Fest and let’s celebrate NYC!

About The Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York

JFDINY was formed by Momo Suzuki, the organization’s director, in 1992. The purpose of the organization is to research, promote, and keep alive interest in traditional Japanese folk dances. Their primary function is the performing, teaching, and preserving authentic dances, historically performed by the working people of Japan. Through dance, JFDINY introduces audiences to the spirit of the Japanese people.

Some of JFDINY’s most notable performances include the Epcot Pavilion at Disney World Florida, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, annual performances at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as an appearance in Madonna’s music video “Nothing Really Matters.”

Recent cultural advising/choreography work includes Portland Opera’s production of Madame Butterfly (2019), as well as a residency in choreography at Boston University for Ronald Richardson’s play Kamioroshi (2019). Recent national media appearances include NBC’s The Today Show. For more information about JFDINY, please visit their website.
