The JC•NYC 2019 Holiday Market Pop-Up Gift Guide!

With only two weeks left to shop for your holiday gifts, Japan Culture•NYC is pleased to present our 2019 last-minute gift guide! This year we are focusing on pop-up shopping experiences. Whether it’s a vendor at a holiday market or a special pop-up shopping event, we have curated a list of great Japanese or Japanese-inspired pop-ups for you to check out and secure the perfect gift.

Holiday Markets

We’ll start with a few of the holiday markets found throughout Manhattan…

Columbus Circle Holiday Market:

Open until the 24th of December
Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Sunday 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

*Paper*Crane*Heart features handmade jewelry made from the Japanese paper chiyogami by local artist Jewel Kawataki. Come check out all the beautiful colors and patterns of chiyogami jewelry in person, like these two popular earrings: the goldfish earrings and the plum blossom studs. Located in booth number C13.

 

This Night will be selling socks, books, and notecards inspired by the patterns and colors of Japan. Designer Kate Williamson spent a year in Kyoto studying Japanese textiles. This inspiration can be found in her sock collection design elements as well as the quality. She will also be selling copies of her beautifully illustrated book, A Year in Japan, and notecards as well. Her booth is number B6.

Holiday Shops at Bryant Park:

Open until the 5th of January
Monday-Friday 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
December 25th: Many shops are open on Christmas Day!
December 31st: 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

JapanWave is featuring Japanese stationery and small gifts. They carry a great selection of kawaii 2020 calendars. Holiday greeting cards range from tiny gift cards to ornate pop-up cards. JapanWave also has a selection of notebooks, sticky notes, and other daily stationery items. They have amazing stocking stuffers like these handmade wooden animal figurines, too. Located in booth E33.

 

Yamazaki Home sells everyday items inspired by life in Japan. This booth carries various daily-use objects for the kitchen, bathroom, and office designed in a clean manner. They also carry great storage and organizational items, too. You’ll be able to find something for all ages at this pop-up. The booth is number E29.

Union Square Holiday Market:

Open until the 24th of December
Monday-Friday 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Sunday 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

LinePosters sells modern, graphic interpretations of popular city transit systems. A collaboration between graphic designer Cayla Ferari and engineer John Breznicky, they offer a range of international cities including Tokyo! At this pop-up, the Tokyo version is available as a 24” x18” print, t-shirt, pint glass, and note cards. hese items make for a unique gift for any Tokyo lover. Located in booth A19.

Nanako features ladies’ clothes designed by a Japanese designer, Nanako, who now resides in NYC. This will be her seventh year participating in the Union Square winter pop-up. She offers stylish, unique, and comfortable clothing like these warm and cozy blanket coats that are perfect for bundling up in this winter. Check out her collection in booth A46.

Stand-Alone Pop-Ups

Wuhao Tenugui AZASU pop-up shop:
Located inside AZASU restaurant – 49 Clinton Street, New York, NY 10002

Monday – Thursday 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday 6:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m.
Closed on Sundays

Stop by AZASU and check out the Wuhao tenugui pop-up shop featuring festive holiday patterns as well as the classics. Not only does tenugui make a great gift, don’t forget it has a dual purpose and can serve as giftwrap, too for the ultimate sustainable gift!

J+B Design

300 7th street Brooklyn, New York 11215

Open daily from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

J+B Design is a unique hybrid store to introduce Japanese local items and made-in-Brooklyn items. This place was created to become a bridge between NY and Japan by showcasing the beauty and artisanship of Japan as well as connecting vibrant Brooklyn artists with Japanese people. They carry a curated selection of different artists and brands, much like a pop-up shop. There is currently a storewide Black Friday sale until the end of the year. You can certainly find the best holiday gifts with a wide range of prices starting at $5. Japanese items include handmade wooden spatulas, indigo-dyed cloths and clutch bags, red rose beauty oils, jewelry, and more. This is the only place in the US where most of these items can be found. They also have made-in-Brooklyn items ranging from clothes, bags, candles, soaps, etc. Various holiday gift packages are available!

Winter Table Pop-up at KOSAKA Art

There are still two more Sundays left to check out the “Winter Table” pop-up sales at KOSAKA. Come and say “hi” and support our local art community. You will find ceramics, Indigo Shibori, and more for your winter table made by @makonishimori @bababasake @dailolabklyn @yumiko.kuga @arounddirt, and more.
