First Church of Christ, Scientist – 10 W. 68th Street at Central Park West

Fellowship for Japan, a coalition of Japan Relief organizations, commemorates the fifth anniversary of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster that devastated the Tohoku region of Northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The program is presented under the auspices of several New York-based Japanese governmental and non-profit organizations, including the Consulate General of Japan in New York; The Japan Foundation, New York; The Nippon Club, Inc.; Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York, Inc.; Japan Center for International Exchange; JETRO New York; Japan Society; the Japanese American Association of New York; the New York Japanese-American Lions Club; JaNet; as well as prefectural associations.
Universal Music Japan recording artist AK Akemi Kakihara, Executive Director of TOGETHER FOR 311, will moderate the evening, which includes speeches from local community leaders and video messages from residents of the affected areas.
While the Tohoku area is recovering, there are still 68,000 people living in temporary housing, five years after the disaster.
Each year since the disaster, Fellowship of Japan has collected message cards from audience members and sent them directly to the victims in Tohoku. Please bring a pen to write your own message of support and encouragement.
Fundraising items will be on sale at the entrance of the church. Products include handmade goods from the Tohoku region, tote bags, antique kimono accessories, and more. All donations collected at the memorial will go toward relief efforts in Tohoku. Cash will be accepted, but if you’d like your donation to go to a specific organization, you can write a check to Japan Society or to Consulate General of Japan (with “Japan Earthquake Relief Fund” in the memo section).

“After five years, the first thing we can do is to promise, once more, never to forget. Never forget that day or the survivors still living in those regions. And never forget the compelling compassion we felt on that day, wanting to do something, anything, for them. – SIDE BY SIDE – Let us join our hearts TOGETHER!”
